Job Hunting - Preparing your resume

The key to getting the interview is based on the presentation of your resume. There are guidelines to follow in order to put out the best resume possible.

(1)    Start with the Microsoft Word program for different templates that can be used so that you know where to begin. Microsoft Word provides excellent templates to help you begin.

(2)    Your name should be in the largest font size, approximately 12-13 up at the top section of your resume. Your contact information including your city, state, zip, phone number and email address should be listed opposite of your name.

(3)    Do not use email addresses that are unprofessional such as sexylady@yahoo.com or bigdog123@hotmail.com. Create an email address with your name as a personal but professional email address.

(4)     Be sure to use font sizes between 10 and 12 to create a legible document. Use bold lettering to separate the names of your employers from your position and duties.

(5) Add an objective to your resume just below your contact information. Follow the guidelines provided on the Word document template. You can also view templates online.

(6) Add your college education degrees and/or certificates prior to your employment history if these are required and/or will assist in acquiring the position you desire.

(7) Be sure to add the name of previous/current employer(s), your supervisor, contact phone number, your position and the dates for which you were employed.

(8) Try using key words in your resume. For instance, if you seek a certain position for which you have experience then you may want to review their requirements. If your experience matches the requirements then add those to your resume. Employers use key word searches on resumes to find candidates that match the position. DO NOT embellish the truth or lie on your resume. Dishonesty is never welcome and they will find out by how well you perform. Honesty IS the best policy.

(9) Include professional/personal references when requested by the employer. Be sure to read the ads thoroughly to provide the employer with what they expect from you.

(10) A 1-2 page resume is expected. Don't forget to spell check and save your resume. You will want to have copies on hand in a folder.

Don't forget to dress for the part! I'll be providing another blog concerning the interview in person process.

These are just small tips to help get you one step ahead of the other candidates. First impressions matter.
